Parts of Accra and Kasoa and its environs experienced an earth tremor at dawn yesterday.

The tremor of unknown magnitude affected areas including McCarthy Hill, Weija, Mile 11, Mandela and adjoining areas.

Some residents of those communities told the Daily Graphic that they experienced the tremor around 4 a.m.

They said although the tremor was minor, they were scared, as their buildings vibrated.

“Even though it was a minor tremor, I thought it was the end of the world,” Mr Erasmus Asare, a resident of Kasoa Amanfrom, said.

He recalled that a similar tremor had occurred after a heavy downpour the previous night in July last year.

The tremor that hit parts of Accra last year created fear and panic among residents of the affected areas.
Past tremors

In January 2006, a tremor measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale hit parts of the capital, according to the Geological Survey Department.

There was a similar tremor – measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale – in May 2003.

Suburbs of the capital, such as Dansoman, Weija, Ashalley Botwe, Madina, East Legon, Trade Fair and Sakumono and their adjoining communities, all felt the earth movement.

The most pronounced tremor experienced in Ghana was at Axim in the Western Region in 1936
