Samsung to unveil Galaxy S10 and two others smartphones today

Today February 20, 2019, Samsung will announce a handful of new products — and if the rumours and leaks we’ve seen are correct, there’s plenty to look forward to.

Nothing has been officially confirmed, but we expect a new Galaxy S10 with a hole-punch notched screen and a Galaxy S10 Plus with three-rear cameras. There should also be a budget Galaxy S10E to rival Apple’s iPhone XR and Galaxy Buds to rival Apple’s AirPods. And, for good measure, there’s the 5G Galaxy phone and a sneak peek at the Samsung’s foldable Galaxy X phone.

However, we won’t know for certain about any product until Samsung’s Unpacked event starts Wednesday at 11 a.m. PT [1900 GMT] in San Francisco, CA.

What to expect

Here’s what Samsung is expected to announce:

Three new phones: Galaxy S10, S10 Plus and S10E

Samsung’s plan for domination

We thought Samsung would save the launch of its foldable “Galaxy X” phone, likely called Fold, for MWC the following week — but, no. The company has unveiled a teaser video that we’ll see its flexible model on Feb. 20, too.

Samsung’s Unpacked events are always a tremendous affair, but this year the company’s showing in 2019 matters more than perhaps ever before. Samsung is still hanging on as the world’s largest seller of mobile phones, but Chinese rival Huawei is hot on Samsung’s heels in the second slot (having booted out Apple), ramping up innovations in 2018 like triple rear cameras and flashy finishes that Samsung has been slow to match.

While Huawei faces bracing challenges of its own, the entire industry is feeling the burn as sales slow. Even Apple, whose iPhones sales made it a trillion dollar company in 2018, has taken a hit on its new iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR, citing flagging interest in China. It’s against this backdrop of softening interest that Samsung is launching a slew of devices in 2019, including a foldable phone and 5G-ready devices.
