Gov’t to establish a Fiscal Council to help maintain Fiscal Discipline

President Akufo-Addo has disclosed that he is bent on making sure his government ensures fiscal discipline irrespective of the state of the economy.

Speaking at the 7th AGI Ghana Industry and Quality Awards held on December 8, 2018 at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra, President Akufo-Addo stated that to ensure his government decision on Fiscal Discipline thrives he will make sure a law is enacted to prevent any government from generating fiscal deficit in excess of 5% in any given year.

“We will in this meeting of Parliament Legislate a fiscal rule that will outlaw any attempt by a government to generate fiscal deficit in excess of 5% in any given year”

President Akufo-Addo also stated that he will establish Presidential Fiscal Advisory Council to help check and advice the government on how to keep track in maintaining fiscal discipline.

“I intend also to establish shortly a Presidential Fiscal Advisory Council compose of reputable economists which will monitor the performance of financial management policies and advice the President on appropriate measures to be taken to ensure fiscal discipline.”

The event, which was held on the theme: “Transforming the Ghanaian Economy Through Industrialization”, saw companies that had performed excellently in various sectors of the economy receiving awards of honour.

At the event, Unilever Ghana Limited was awarded Best Corporate Social Responsibilty Company of the Year, Olam Ghana Limited was also adjudged Best Company Employer of the Year and the Overall Best Industrial Company of the Year went to Nestle Ghana.

Fan Milk Limited, Nexans Kabelmetal LTD, B5 Plus, Kasapreko Company Limited, Wilmar Africa Limited, Accra City Hotel, Ecobank Ghana amongst others won respective Sector Awards.
