Ghana has exported 596,000 tonnes of cocoa beans as at the end of January, 2020. Figures reflect a marginal increase in cocoa beans export.

This was contained in a report published by the Ghana COCOBOD regarding figures for cocoa exports for the 2019/2020 cocoa season.

This figures indicate an improvement in cocoa beans export as compared to figures recorded in the previous season which stood at 591,000 tonnes.

Graded and sealed cocoa

The terminology for such exports, known as graded and sealed cocoa, captures the amount of cocoa beans checked for its quality and sealed in bags for export.

The harvest for the country’s cocoa beans started in October, and it is expected to continue until mid-year. According to COCOBOD, cocoa production in Ghana this season is expected to reach 850,000 tonnes.

The regulator of the sector is banging its hopes on the supply of fertilizer and the introduction of improved seeds to help the country increase its production in subsequent seasons.
