Over 82,000 subscribers dump Tigo, Vodafone

About 82,000 mobile voice subscribers ditched telecom giants Vodafone and Tigo in the month of August.

This is according to the monthly market share report released by the National Communication Authority (NCA).

The two were the only companies that recorded declines in the number of subscribers.

Mobile phone voice subscribers increased by about 162,000 to 29.5million at the end of August 2014.

This represents a market penetration rate of 111.2%.

It lost about 61,000 subscribers.

Vodafone-Carphone-Warehou-001This is the second time this year it has recorded a net decline in voice subscribers, having recorded significant growth over the months.

It however had about 6.7million voice subscribers at the end of August representing about 22.7% of the total market share.

The other loser, Tigo lost about 21,000 subscribers which represents about 0.5percent decline. At the end of August, Tigo had about 4mllion subscribers representing 13.6percent of the total market share.

On the other hand, the four other telcos recorded some additions in their subscriber base.

The gainers were led by MTN which recorded an increase in subscribers by about 110,000 presenting a 0.8percent growth. This shot up its market share to about 45.9percent which represents 13.5mllion subscribers.

Airtel followed MTN’s lead. Airtel in August increased by about 97,000 in voice subscribers representing a growth of about 2.7percent. This shot up its market share from 12.5percent to 12.7percent representing about 3.8million subscribers.

Glo managed another recovery from its downward slide. It gained a little under 36,000 subscribers which represent about 2.6percent growth. Its market share stood at about 4.8percent representing about 1.4million subscribers.

Expresso recorded a net gain of about 1,500 new voice subscribers, enough to maintain its market share at 0.4percent. It had about 124,000 subscribers at the end of August.
