Nkroful is where Ghana’s first prime minister and president was born
Ghana Talks Business team got the chance to visit Nkroful, the birthplace of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Nkroful lies deep in the western part of Ghana. It is situated 83 km west of Takoradi in the Western region of Ghana.
The native tribe is called Nzema and the people are very well identified by their peculiar rich dark skin complexion which the world’s top models would be envious of. The Kundum festival is the major festival you would find on the Nzema land.
Never mind if you cannot understand the Nzema language, most people there speak Fanti, a variant of the Akan language which is spoken by over 90% of Ghanaians.
Back into Nkroful and into Dr. Nkrumah’s home, you may have to pay a very small fee to have access to the household. You also get a number of souvenirs of Dr. Nkrumah and a very young but knowledgeable guide to tell you a lot more of the history.
The house still showcases some rooms with history
This is where it was told that Madam Elizabeth Nyaneba, Dr. Nkrumah’s mother was cooking when she went into labour leading to his birth. And therefore, that is where the man ate from in the growing up.

The Mystery River in Nkroful
Where it was told, Dr Nkrumah then a child being carried by her mother at her back told his mother that she (the mother) has stepped on a fish. His mother truly picked up a fish under her feet. This is one of the mysteries you hear in detail when you visit the birthplace of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Among other things you would find in Nkroful, the birthplace of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, are the mystical River Subre, some forest reserves namely Draw River Forest Reserve, Ndumfri Forest Reserve, and Shelter Forest Reserve. On the way from Takoradi, one would see some large rubber plantations along the rich natural resources such as oil palm, coconut palm and cocoa.
